Mike
As part of the reinstatement process, SR22 insurance is required by most states. An SR22 form is a proof of financial responsibility by motorists that have been convicted of any traffic offense that usually includes an accident. This SR22 form is usually required to be carried for a period of three years.
An SR22 must be filed with the BMV for a period of 3 years from the date that is determined by the BMV. If you are required to carry an SR22 in Indiana, you will need to get the required car insurance coverage required by your state. Usually, an SR22 will be required for the following reasons:
- A driver did not provide proof of liability insurance to the DMV
- The driver have been convicted of driving without car insurance
- The driver have been involved in an accident without car insurance,
- The driver is applying for a hardship or probationary permit, or
- The driver have been convicted of driving under the influence or DUI
On the other hand, SR50 insurance is a form is used by a driver to provide proof of current insurance to the BMV. This form includes that start and end dates of the current car insurance policy.
For instance, the Indiana BMV states that if a driver is not insured at the time of a traffic offense or accident, they may required to a 1 year revocation or suspension of their drivers license, will need to pay a reinstatement fee of between $150-$300 and you will be needed to fill out an SR50 or Affidavit of Current Insurance, and by car insurance company and go back to the BMV.
If you need to file an SR50 or Affidavit of Current Insurance, you may get this form online if you want to check it.
So these type of forms are not really your car insurance coverage but just a form showing to the DMV that you have the proof of car insurance required by the state.
If you are required to get certain car insurance coverage to have your driver’s license reinstated then the DMV or the court involved will be able to let you know exactly what auto insurance coverage these are.
Then, you may be able yo inform your car insurance agent to assist you to get these insurance coverage and have the SR50 filled out. Also, if the SR22 is needed to be filed, they can also do that for you.
To get more information about SR22 or SR50 insurance, you may check with the DMV.
